Power Dressing for Professionals

12/04/09 13:17

The other day I attended a short conference about selling yourself and getting that job that you want. I decided to come not because I really needed to come. It's just that I felt it would be interesting to know more about how I could improve myself.

One of the lecturers was a representative from the local John Robert Powers school here. He talked about power dressing and how you can make it work to your advantage. According to him, it should be one's goal to tell the interviewers, for instance, that you are fit for the job even though you have not said a word yet. It is the goal of the power dresser to get noticed. It is his job to make a good impression during the first 3 seconds of a meeting.

Power dressing has been seen to be a way to make a person look confident and competent. The style typically applies to women, though much attention has also been given to men in recent years.

Since the speaker only had around half an hour to talk, he had to make some quick tips and not elaborate on them. He said that power dressing does not only apply when wearing business attire. It applies anytime of the day. Among the tips that he gave for girls was making sure that the color combination is striking. Furthermore, for business attire, the speaker suggested to aim for a conservative look. Same goes for men. Prefered colors for business attire these days are gray and black.

As for footwear, the speaker told women that they should always wear closed-toe shoes. They should not show their toes, though it is OK to show some leg skin. As for men, only leather shoes are allowed. The footwear's color should also match that of the belt's and that of the leather strap of the watch. Socks should be worn high so that leg skin won't be seen.

Well that was a very brief talk, but I certainly learned a lot. For more tips on power dressing, you can check this article out.
